BOUDLER, Colo. (KDVR) — Members of the Jewish community in Boulder gathered on Monday to send a message of peace and strength after the June 1 terror attack that killed one person and injured more than a dozen others. A special event celebrating Hanukkah also included words of support for those targeted in an antisemitic attack in Bondi Beach, Australia.

“For all of us here in this world that we share we need to stop the hate,” organizer Chany Scheiner told FOX31.

More than 200 people registered to attend the menorah lighting at the courthouse on Pearl Street Mall.

“We are coming together to share a light, joy, resilience,” said Boulder JCC Executive Director Jonathan Lev.

Organizers commissioned a special menorah called “Tradition with a Twist” created by Rabbi and artist Yitzchok Moully, who traveled to Boulder from New Jersey for the presentation.

‘When I heard of the terrorist attack that took place right here I was in the process of creating my new menorah and I said to myself that I have to reach out to the Boulder Jewish community,” he told FOX31.
Rabbi Moully told FOX31 the light of the menorah is a powerful symbol.

“The status quo isn’t enough with all the darkness that’s out there in the world our job is to add even more light,” he said.

FOX31 spoke with attendees who praised the modern design of the menorah.

“It’s very Boulder you know especially with everything that we’ve gone through here this year,” said one resident.
Organizers say they hope the light representing a flame will allow them to reclaim the symbolism after the fiery terrorist attack that took place near the courthouse lawn.

“Use the fire of the menorah, which is positive and healing and to use that in a positive way,” said Scheiner.
